Home Safety Features to Look For in a Senior Apartment
Look at the small things. They decide whether a home is easy to live in at 75.
Floors: anti-skid tiles in bathrooms and balconies. Bathrooms: grab bars near the toilet and shower, and a raised or easy-seat toilet. Doors: wide enough for a wheelchair, with lock systems that are simple to use. Lighting: glare-free, with motion-sensor lights for night trips. Walls: rounded corners. Alarms: a panic switch in the bedroom and bathrooms, wired to someone who answers. Lifts: enough of them, with one large enough for a stretcher.
Ask who answers an alarm at 2 a.m. and how long they take to reach you.
